Training Hub

The Sex Education Collaborative Training Hub lists trainings for sex educators, facilitators, and other professionals on best practices for sharing important information with clients and the public. From teaching anatomy inclusively to effectively addressing bias in the classroom to addressing racial justice and equity in sex education, the Training Hub includes trainings, technical assistance, and policy support from state, regional, and national leaders in the field of sex education.

Foundations: Core Skills Training for Sex Education

This one-day Foundations training covers the essential skills for facilitating sex education, including:

  • climate building in the classroom,
  • understanding state and local sex education policies,
  • pedagogical approaches for experiential learning,
  • values clarification
  • managing personal disclosure,
  • and handling difficult questions and harassing comments.

Optional half-day modules for a second day of training include cultural proficiency, LGBTQ inclusion, trauma-informed approaches, and facilitation skills for commonly used sex education strategies.

Policy Support

Advocates staff provides technical assistance, training and resources to national, state, and local organizations regarding youth-centered reproductive and sexual health/rights/justice public policy and communications. Policy staff draft model legislation and policy briefs, track and provide in-depth policy analysis, and can support partners in building out advocacy strategies to improve policies and practices at the federal, state, and local levels. In addition, communications staff can assist with talking points, public speaking training, and training regarding media outreach. Staff is also available to assist organizations wishing to raise the visibility of young people and their experiences and needs through social or traditional media. Affirmative Consent 

Cultural perspectives, organizational policies, and local and national laws are changing to embrace the principle of Affirmative Consent. A culture of consent is one in which it is the norm, not the exception, for all persons to obtain consent prior to sexual experiences. Many educators feel this policy shift is a step in the right direction and has the potential to create positive change.

Affirmative Consent policies can:

  • Build communication skills
  • Construct a respectful frame about personal choice
  • Help prevent sexual assault
  • Address negative, outdated gender roles

Objectives of this training:

  • Explain how Affirmative Consent contributes to changing youth norms and attitudes around sexual relationships.
  • Deliver a pitch to advocate for the inclusion of Affirmative Consent content in educational settings.
  • Develop strategies for addressing youth criticism of Affirmative Consent.
  • Describe the key messages, critical talking points, and different activities included in the Teaching Affirmative Consent supplement's lesson plan.
  • Describe at least three ways to reinforce Affirmative Consent messaging within related activities and classroom discussions.

Navigating the Politics of Public Health: Finding Common Ground in Support of Adolescent Sexual and Reproductive Health

In this four-part recorded webinar series, participants will learn how to advocate in support of adolescent sexual and reproductive health with conservative-leaning policymakers and key stakeholders, including:

  • strategies for knowing your audience to understand their background and perspective,
  • opportunities for finding common ground to work toward a shared goal,
  • leveraging the media to increase your public awareness, and
  • tactics for identifying and cultivating key messengers and mobilizing your community.

A shifted landscape of new or strengthened power players (particularly, those who lean conservative) at all levels of government, combined with threats to public health investments that our nation’s youth are facing, necessitates a reinvigorated call to public policy action by individuals and organizations that support youth and their families.
