Virtual Professional Development is a simulated classroom where teachers can practice teaching student avatars using short scenarios and support from an instructional coach, so they can quickly learn and master the skills they most need to be effective. With upper elementary, middle and high school classrooms, Virtual PD has scenarios for teachers of all grade levels across a wide range of topics aligned with the Professional Learning Standards for Sex Education (PLSSE). Using the Virtual Professional Development classroom simulator, the educator will practice implementing Student Centered Learning When Teaching Sex Education with the student avatars. In this scenario, the educator will be modifying an activity that teaches their students how to use condoms correctly for varying learning styles. Participants are encouraged to stretch to use a learning style different from those they are personally strong at. Key content and ideas for adaptations are included in the short video educators should watch prior to the simulation so they can be prepared to use their adaptations.

Using the Virtual Professional Development classroom simulator, the educator will practice Tailoring Lessons to Meet Age and Developmental Levels with the student avatars. In this scenario, the educator has recently noticed an increase in inappropriate touching happening in the hallways at school. So the participant decides to address this issue through a lesson on personal boundaries with their students. The participant will read various situations aloud asking students whether these situations would violate their personal boundaries or not. The participant will need to demonstrate the ability to analyze and tailor lesson plans to match the age and developmental stages of their students.

In this scenario, the educator will soon be starting a unit on puberty with their students. One of the points they want to stress with their students is the importance of using medically accurate names for body parts, including reproductive anatomy and external genitalia. In this simulation with five students, the participant will need to demonstrate the ability to use medically accurate terms and explain the benefits of teaching these to students.

In this VPD scenario, the educator will review a brief passage, examine the use of language and adapt the passage to remove assumptions about gender identity. Once in the simulation with five students, the participant will lead a brainstorm activity about STDs and how they can be prevented. The participant will need to demonstrate three strategies that can be used to make lessons affirming for students of all gender identities.

Using the Virtual Professional Development simulated classroom, the educator will practice Conducting Effective Condom Demonstrations with the student avatars. In this VPD scenario, the educator will, as part of one of the final lessons in the sexual health unit, do a condom demonstration for students, so they can see all of the steps involved with using an external (male) condom correctly. They have just sorted all of the steps for using condoms correctly at their seats and now the participant will review provided steps with them while doing the demonstration. Educators can do an internal (female) condom demonstration instead if they prefer.

In this VPD scenario, the participant will conduct a values continuum activity with an established classroom community. In this simulation with the five students, the educator will ask students to respond to the statement: “It’s OK for students our age to have sex, as long as they use protection.” The participant will need to demonstrate the ability to respond to students’ conversations and questions regarding personal values when teaching about sexuality.

Using the Virtual Professional Development simulated classroom, the educator will practice Answering Difficult Questions about Sexuality with the student avatars. In this VPD scenario, the participant is teaching a group of five students about risk behaviors for transmission of STDs using three categories (High Risk, Low Risk and No Risk). Lots of questions arise as students try and determine which category certain behaviors fall into if one person has an STD. The educator will need to demonstrate the ability to effectively respond to three different types of challenging questions including students’ values-based questions. This scenario is available for high school, middle school and upper elementary students with varying questions depending on grade selected.

Using the Virtual Professional Development simulated classroom, the educator will practice Creating LGBQ Inclusive Classrooms with the student avatars. In this VPD scenario, the participant will need to demonstrate the use of inclusive and affirming language and the ability to intervene effectively in homophobic and other bullying comments and actions. The educator will introduce the topic of STDs and ask each student to share one behavior they have heard that can place someone at risk for getting an STD. This scenario can be used with high school or middle school students.
