Puberty 101: Teaching about the Birds and the Bees
Puberty is a time of physical, emotional, and social changes that can cause some young people great angst. Equipping students with the knowledge and skills about these changes can help them navigate through this challenging time and emerge strong, happy, and healthy. This workshop will provide you with a number of lessons to teach students about the changes of puberty, and will help you improve your skills on addressing this sensitive topic in an inclusive way. Virtual PD - Trauma Informed Sex Education
Virtual Professional Development is a simulated classroom where teachers can practice teaching student avatars using short scenarios and support from an instructional coach, so they can quickly learn and master the skills they most need to be effective. With upper elementary, middle and high school classrooms, Virtual PD has scenarios for teachers of all grade levels across a wide range of topics aligned with the Professional Learning Standards for Sex Education (PLSSE). Using the Virtual Professional Development classroom simulator, the educator will practice implementing Trauma Informed Sex Education with the student avatars. In this scenario, the educator will introduce the topic of consent with five students. They will facilitate a myth vs fact activity by reading various statements aloud, allowing time for students to decide whether each statement is a myth or a fact. The participant will need to demonstrate three strategies of a trauma-informed approach to sex education and explain the differences between positive vs. shaming approaches when teaching.

Advocates for Youth Trainings
Advocates for Youth is delighted to offer half-day, full day and multi-day training - both in-person and virtually - to support teachers and community-based educators to develop the comfort, knowledge and core skills needed to implement sexuality education effectively.
Virtual Professional Development is available using our simulated classrooms and student avatars to help educators master the skills needed to effectively teach sex education. Participants can participate from a laptop, tablet or phone and can select from among the 16 skill scenarios and three grade levels we currently have available. Please email Nora Gelperin (nora@advocatesforyouth.org) to schedule your time in the simulator and for more information about our Virtual PD opportunities.
In-Person Workshops are each tailored to the unique needs of the group and their setting and will focus on ensuring that participants learn the critical skills needed to implement sexuality education with any grade level or on any topic. We also offer Training of Trainers for those looking to increase their skill at providing professional development to other professionals. Advocates for Youth commits to offering the lowest priced workshops we can, often just asking that our direct costs for travel and supplies be covered, and we will do our best to work with any budget. Workshops must be at least three hours and have a group size of between 10-30 people per trainer. Multiple trainers are available upon request for groups larger than 30. For our Rights, Respect, Responsibility K-12 Sex Education Curriculum, training is recommended but not required.

Using the Virtual Professional Development simulated classroom, the educator will practice Increasing Personal Comfort When Teaching Sex Ed with the student avatars. In this VPD scenario, the participant will conduct an activity about the physical changes of puberty with an established classroom community. In this simulation with the five students, the educator will ask students to engage in a think-pair-share activity to brainstorm three physical changes of puberty and then have both small groups report back. The participant will need to demonstrate personal comfort when leading this discussion with students.

Transgender and Gender Expansive Identities Indicator
- Indicator 1 (K-12): Explain how availability of supportive school staff, presence of Gay-Straight Alliances (GSAs), gender-inclusive curricular resources, and the presence of comprehensive enumerated anti-harassment school policies are related to improved school climate for students of all gender identities.
- Indicator 2 (K-12): Demonstrate the use of inclusive and affirming language. (S)
- Indicator 3 (K-12): Define gender identity and sex assigned at birth.
- Indicator 4 (K-12): Explain how gender identity and gender expression are distinct from each other and from sexual orientation.
