The Sex Education Collaborative Training Hub lists trainings for sex educators, facilitators, and other professionals on best practices for sharing important information with clients and the public. From teaching anatomy inclusively to effectively addressing bias in the classroom to addressing racial justice and equity in sex education, the Training Hub includes trainings, technical assistance, and policy support from state, regional, and national leaders in the field of sex education.

Facilitating from a Trauma-Informed Lens

Our Spark*ED online sex educator courses focus on the information, skills, and theory required to deliver impactful and inclusive sex education. Our philosophy towards sex education is at the heart of the Spark*ED curriculum and all course materials have been created with a social justice and racial equity lens and incorporate the latest information and research in the fields of of sexual health, gender, adolescent development, learning styles, and behavioral change. Each course has been reviewed by content matter experts, including medical professionals, trainers, classroom teachers, public health workers, and researchers.

This twelve hour virtual instructor-led training on Trauma-Informed Facilitation The course is divided into four 90 minute synchronous training sessions, followed by a practice and coaching session in the Advocates for Youth Classroom Simulation program to allow you to practice the skills you learned in the class in a low-stakes environment with virtual avatar students. You'll learn skills and to apply techniques needed to create and sustain a trauma-informed learning environment, and to identify and work with young people who may be exhibiting behaviors based on previous trauma.  After taking the course you will be able to:

  • Create trauma-informed learning environments
  • Facilitate trauma-informed sex education
  • Identify and respond to signs of trauma
  • Recognize and practice responding to physical, verbal and behavioral signs of trauma
  • Use empathy and to validate emotions

Relationships and Consent

Our Spark*ED online sex educator courses focus on the information, skills, and theory required to deliver impactful and inclusive sex education. Our philosophy towards sex education is at the heart of the Spark*ED curriculum and all course materials have been created with a social justice and racial equity lens and incorporate the latest information and research in the fields of of sexual health, gender, adolescent development, learning styles and behavioral change. Each course has been reviewed by content matter experts, including medical professionals, trainers, classroom teachers, public health workers, and researchers.

This four hour self-paced online course on Relationships and Consent emphasizes how to guide young people on an exploration of their relationships, including teaching young folks how to build and maintain positive relationships and how to identify harmful and supportive behaviors. We tackle the following questions, and more, in this module:

  • What does it mean to be supportive? Unsupportive?
  • Who decides what's supportive/unsupportive? 
  • How do we define relationships - romantic, platonic, familiar?
  • What does consent look like? 

Empower young people by developing and strengthening their skills to navigate all kinds of relationships rooted in consent and clear communication.  You’ll teach them tools they can use to talk through things when they feel uncertain and set them up for successful future consent conversations. The more we talk, the more we mainstream these areas of everyday life. Learn how to define and separate your personal values and beliefs, examine expectations set forth by your community, and navigate conflicting beliefs. We’ll discuss what you need to know to make informed decisions to better teach and support young people in a safe and inclusive environment. The course is divided into four 45-minute bite-size pieces that encompass a range of learning styles including interactive assessments, videos modeling classroom instruction, and real-life scenarios.

This course helps you to:

  • Explore and understand relationships as an essential part of everyone’s lives.
  • Identify the variety of intimate and romantic relationships that can exist in people’s lives – expressing affection and types of intimacy.
  • Teach youth to identify supportive and harmful behaviors and help develop the life skill of building and maintaining positive relationships.
  • Review communication tips and skills.
  • Build an understanding of what consent is and isn’t and that all people deserve to have their consent communicated, recognized, and respected.
  • Identify relationship skills to evaluate a relationship, set boundaries, end a relationship, and handle rejection.
  • Teach young people how to build personal power and agency.

Teaching About Sexual Anatomy and Reproduction

In this four hour self-paced online training on Sexual Anatomy and Reproduction you’ll learn to teach in an engaging, inclusive, and body-positive manner, unassuming of gender, orientation, experiences, body parts, or behavior of young people. This comprehensive approach will allow you to have real conversations about anatomy and the reproductive system in an inclusive way, emphasizing the differences between cisgender, transgender, and intersex bodies. This course will also cover the wide range of “normal” anatomy – from the testicle/penis reproductive system, to the ovaries/uterus/vagina system, to the menstrual cycle, and all about pregnancy. The course is divided into four 30 - 45-minute bite-size pieces that encompass a range of learning styles including interactive assessments, videos modeling classroom instruction, and real-life scenarios. During the course you’ll:

  • Learn how to make anatomy and reproduction sex-positive and engaging.
  • Understand the importance of inclusive language when teaching anatomy and reproduction.
  • Recognize that there is a wide range of “normal” anatomy.
  • Define cisgender, transgender, and intersex.
  • Identify the parts of the reproductive system and their functions in people with ovaries, uteri, vaginas, testicles, and penises.

Our Spark*ED online sex educator courses focus on the information, skills, and theory required to deliver impactful and inclusive sex education. Our philosophy towards sex education is at the heart of the Spark*ED curriculum and all course materials have been created with a social justice and racial equity lens and incorporate the latest information and research in the fields of of sexual health, gender, adolescent development, learning styles, and behavioral change. Each course has been reviewed by content matter experts, including medical professionals, trainers, classroom teachers, public health workers, and researchers.

This 12-hour virtual instructor-led course focuses on growing your skills to create and sustain inclusive and affirming learning environments. You’ll practice and hone a variety of essential skills including when it's okay to use specific language and identifying and interrupting micro-agressions. Delivered through five weekly, two-hour sessions held at pre-set times, the course incorporates a hands-on practice session utilizing the Advocates for Youth classroom simulation program (simulated teaching experience) which allows you to practice the skills you learned in the class in a low-stakes environment with virtual avatar students. After taking the course you will be able to:

  • Learn key vocabulary from the LGBTQ+ community along with language evolution and reclaiming of language
  • Differentiate between inclusive and affirming learning environments
  • Apply basic, intermediate, and advanced strategies to maintain inclusive and affirming learning environments
  • Apply the Theory of Intersectionality into your facilitation to lift up all identities held in the classroom

Our Spark*ED online sex educator courses focus on the information, skills, and theory required to deliver impactful and inclusive sex education. Our philosophy towards sex education is at the heart of the Spark*ED curriculum and all course materials have been created with a social justice and racial equity lens and incorporate the latest information and research in the fields of of sexual health, gender, adolescent development, learning styles, and behavioral change. Each course has been reviewed by content matter experts, including medical professionals, trainers, classroom teachers, public health workers, and researchers. These self-guided courses are a convenient 2 - 3 hours broken into 25 - 30-minute modules. Learning tools include interactive training, videos of classroom instruction, real life scenarios, and self-assessment throughout each course to ensure participants have mastered all the information.
