The Sex Education Collaborative Training Hub lists trainings for sex educators, facilitators, and other professionals on best practices for sharing important information with clients and the public. From teaching anatomy inclusively to effectively addressing bias in the classroom to addressing racial justice and equity in sex education, the Training Hub includes trainings, technical assistance, and policy support from state, regional, and national leaders in the field of sex education.

Facilitating from a Cultural Humility & Responsiveness Lens

Our Spark*ED online sex educator courses focus on the information, skills, and theory required to deliver impactful and inclusive sex education. Our philosophy towards sex education is at the heart of the Spark*ED curriculum and all course materials have been created with a social justice and racial equity lens and incorporate the latest information and research in the fields of of sexual health, gender, adolescent development, learning styles, and behavioral change. Each course has been reviewed by content matter experts, including medical professionals, trainers, classroom teachers, public health workers, and researchers.

This 14 hour virtual instructor-led course focuses on growing your skills to artfully  deliver sex education in their community.  This course provides participants the opportunity to delve into theories, strategies, and learn and practice skills to teach and create learning environments with young people through a cultural humility and responsiveness lens. The course is delivered through five weekly 2 hour sessions held at pre-set times.  The course incorporates a practice and coaching session using the Advocates for Youth Virtual Classroom (simulated teaching experience) which allows you to practice the skills you learned in the training in a low-stakes environment with virtual avatar students.  After completing the training you should be able to: 

  • Apply a cultural humility and responsive lens in the learning environment 
  • Apply the Theory of Intersectionality in our facilitation to lift up all identities in the learning environment
  • Strengthen your understanding of the youth you serve based on their cultural context and experiences
  • Understand implicit bias
  • Apply models to respond when you or a learner commit a microaggression
  • Adapt lessons or curricula to be culturally responsive

Facilitating from a Trauma-Informed Lens

Our Spark*ED online sex educator courses focus on the information, skills, and theory required to deliver impactful and inclusive sex education. Our philosophy towards sex education is at the heart of the Spark*ED curriculum and all course materials have been created with a social justice and racial equity lens and incorporate the latest information and research in the fields of of sexual health, gender, adolescent development, learning styles, and behavioral change. Each course has been reviewed by content matter experts, including medical professionals, trainers, classroom teachers, public health workers, and researchers.

This twelve hour virtual instructor-led training on Trauma-Informed Facilitation The course is divided into four 90 minute synchronous training sessions, followed by a practice and coaching session in the Advocates for Youth Classroom Simulation program to allow you to practice the skills you learned in the class in a low-stakes environment with virtual avatar students. You'll learn skills and to apply techniques needed to create and sustain a trauma-informed learning environment, and to identify and work with young people who may be exhibiting behaviors based on previous trauma.  After taking the course you will be able to:

  • Create trauma-informed learning environments
  • Facilitate trauma-informed sex education
  • Identify and respond to signs of trauma
  • Recognize and practice responding to physical, verbal and behavioral signs of trauma
  • Use empathy and to validate emotions
  • Apply trauma-informed teaching techniques

*Prerequisite - Completion of the Spark*ED Trauma-Informed Sex Education self-paced course.

Teaching About Abstinence and Birth Control

Our Spark*ED online sex educator courses focus on the information, skills, and theory required to deliver impactful and inclusive sex education. Our philosophy towards sex education is at the heart of the Spark*ED curriculum and all course materials have been created with a social justice and racial equity lens and incorporate the latest information and research in the fields of of sexual health, gender, adolescent development, learning styles and behavioral change. Each course has been reviewed by content matter experts, including medical professionals, trainers, classroom teachers, public health workers, and researchers.

This three hour self-paced online training on Abstinence and Birth Control provides an overview of behavioral, hormonal, and barrier birth control methods, including abstinence.  You’ll learn to teach about each method and its effectiveness, and how help young people navigate information when deciding what form of birth control might work best for them. The course is divided into four 30 - 45-minute bite-size pieces that encompass a range of learning styles including interactive assessments, videos modeling classroom instruction, and real-life scenarios. After taking the course you will be able to:

  • Identify key teaching concepts for abstinence and birth control.
  • Explain how to create and adapt inclusive lessons about abstinence and birth control.
  • Describe the benefit of teaching about sexual abstinence and why abstinence may not be 100% effective.
  • Describe traditional abstinence-only education and why it is both ineffective and non-inclusive.
  • Describe different forms of birth control and the effectiveness of each one.
  • Identify important factors one should consider when selecting a birth control method.
  • Explain how hormonal birth control, barriers, and other methods prevent pregnancy.
  • Identify where to find reliable, medically accurate information about birth control.
  • Describe how to use a condom in a demonstration.
  • Explain why it is important for everyone to learn about birth control, regardless of the type of sex they will or will not be having.

Reaching the Adult Learner: The Science & Art of Masterful Facilitation

This session is intended for those who work with adult learners who wish to create a powerful learning environment that results in clients taking action. With adult learners, it’s often clear what to present, but how to present it may be more challenging. Participants explore the latest in professional development research, learning theory, and brain research as it relates to adult learners to understand how the human brain acquires, retains, and applies information. They examine proven models and strategies for designing effective events, facilitating diverse groups, and motivating learners to take action. Additionally, in the longer session, participants review and practice best strategies for managing and preventing difficult training issues, including resistant or unengaged participants.

Objectives of this course:

  • Describe the research-based elements of effective training design and delivery.
  • Identify best practices for reaching adult learners.
  • Adopt a variety of facilitation techniques and strategies that engage and motivate learners.
  • Employ strategies to manage discouraged and/or resistant participants.
  • Identify resources for further study and practice.
  • Initiate a personal plan of action to strengthen their facilitation skills.
